Rock Hill High Senior Volleyball Player Inspires Community Amid Mother’s Battle with Cancer

Unity in Adversity

Rock Hill High Senior Volleyball Star Shines Amidst Personal Challenges

In the bustling town of Rock Hill, South Carolina, there’s a vibrant atmosphere surrounding Rock Hill High School’s volleyball team this season, and at the heart of it is Pippin Joldersma. As a senior, Pippin has not only demonstrated her skills on the court but is also serving as an inspiration to her teammates, friends, and the entire community. Leading the Bearcats with an impressive 24 blocks and standing strong as the second-highest in kills with 66, she’s making her mark in her final high school season.

Outstanding Performances

One of Pippin’s standout moments came during a match against Clover on September 3, where she delivered an incredible performance. With 12 kills, two blocks, and two digs, she showcased her ability to dominate on the court. Such impressive numbers have fans cheering her on, fueling the excitement for the rest of the season.

A Community United

However, it hasn’t been all spikes and digs for Pippin this season. Behind the scenes, she’s been facing a deeply personal struggle as her mother, Candy Joldersma, was recently diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, a diagnosis that has weighed heavily on the hearts of those who know the family. The journey ahead is tough, but the Rock Hill community has shown resilience and support, rallying around Pippin and her family in this challenging time.

A Special Event for Candy

“Blue Out event for colon cancer” in honor of Candy Joldersma. This initiative is more than just a game; it’s a heartfelt tribute aimed at showing support and spreading awareness about colon cancer. The entire school is coming together to create a loving atmosphere where fans and players can unite for a common cause.

Building Candy’s Garden

One of the remarkable aspects of this event is that the community is turning their collective compassion into action. Through a fundraiser organized by fellow parents and supporters, they aim to build a “beautiful patio space” for Candy, which the team affectionately has named “Candy’s Garden.” This serene space would allow Candy to enjoy quality time with her family amidst the challenges they face.

Kathy Sambuco, a parent of a Rock Hill player, shared that this initiative holds a special place in their hearts. “We just want to bring some joy to this wonderful family,” she said, embodying the spirit of resilience that Rock Hill is known for. With many players on Rock Hill who have connections through travel ball, including several from Catawba Ridge, this game is set to be filled with emotional moments of unity and support.

A Night of Hope

The upcoming game promises to be a night of unforgettable emotions, filled with cheers, camaraderie, and awareness. As the community of Rock Hill comes together under the Friday night lights, they’re not just supporting Pippin and her team; they’re standing in solidarity with the Joldersma family in their fight against cancer. It’s a testament to the strength of community, love, and hope that can emerge even in the toughest times.

In these moments, the score on the court becomes secondary to the collective spirit of kindness and support. As everyone gears up for the game, the thrill for volleyball combines with a powerful message: together, we can make a difference.
