Rock Hill, S.C. Rallies to Support Recovery Efforts in North Carolina

Rock Hill, S.C., is witnessing a powerful community response as local group Hungry Heroes shifts its focus to aid those affected by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina. Founded by Amanda Riggan, Hungry Heroes is dedicated to providing nourishment and support to both victims of the storm and those working tirelessly on the recovery front lines.

Responding to a Crisis

Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, which left many in Western North Carolina grappling with destruction, Riggan felt compelled to act. “I’ve never in my life seen anything like that,” Riggan remarked about the damage seen in the High Country. With prior experience in mission work, she found this situation deeply impactful. Her goal now is to replace heartache with hope, all while delivering hot meals and kind smiles.

Serving Up Hot Meals

Hungry Heroes has quickly adapted its menu to meet the immediate needs of the impacted communities. “We’ve done hot dogs, hamburgers, fried bologna sandwiches,” Riggan explained. “Now, a cold front is coming in so we’re doing chilis and soups.” This shift illustrates the group’s commitment to providing warm and comforting meals during difficult times.

Honoring Heroes and Helping Neighbors

The organization originated in 2018, following the tragic loss of York County detective Mike Doty. Initially focused on supporting military members and first responders, Hungry Heroes has expanded its mission to encompass anyone affected by a crisis. Riggan emphasized the increasing need for support in the wake of Hurricane Helene. “At this point, I’m never going to turn away someone in need who’s hungry. There’s definitely a need right now,” she noted.

Community Support is Vital

Riggan underscored that as long as donations continue influx from the community, Hungry Heroes will maintain its outreach. “I never know who’s going to come through the line,” she said, referencing a diverse group of individuals, including residents, utility workers, and even the homeless. “Just to see that, hey, we care, and here’s a hot meal. I hope it changes their lives as well,” she added.

Every Contribution Matters

Riggan also advocates for the idea that no gesture is too small. “People think my one loaf of bread or my socks probably aren’t helping. It absolutely is,” she insisted. Each small act of kindness can make a crucial difference for someone who has lost everything. “It’s devastating,” she concludes, reminding the community of their collective strength in the face of adversity.

Continuing the Mission

Hungry Heroes is actively encouraging local residents to contribute, whether through direct donations or by volunteering their time. Riggan remains hopeful that together, they can continue to offer much-needed support to those affected by Hurricane Helene. The organization’s impact highlights the spirit of community resilience during trying times and the vital role each individual replays in supporting one another.
