Atlanta, Georgia – Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball Opens Season with Dominant Victory
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women’s basketball team kicked off their season with an impressive performance, defeating the Winthrop Eagles 85-39 at McCamish Pavilion. The game took place on Monday afternoon, marking the season opener for both teams.
Strong Start Sets the Tone
The Yellow Jackets established early dominance, fueled by standout efforts from Dani Carnegie and Tonie Morgan. Carnegie led the team with a total of 17 points, while Morgan contributed 15 points, six assists, and four rebounds. The team employed aggressive play, with Morgan scoring six points during an 8-0 run that propelled Georgia Tech to a 26-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Building the Lead
As the game progressed, the Yellow Jackets showcased their strength on both sides of the ball. By halftime, Tech had extended their advantage to 40-19. The third quarter saw them launch an explosive 15-0 run, highlighted by three-pointers from Carnegie and Morgan, which further widened the gap to 69-31 heading into the final quarter.
Defensive Excellence
Georgia Tech’s defense was key to the rout. They limited Winthrop to a mere 34 percent shooting from the field and completely stifled their three-point attempts, causing the Eagles to miss all 10 shots from beyond the arc. Additionally, the Yellow Jackets capitalized on 22 turnovers committed by Winthrop, turning those mistakes into 25 points.
Balanced Scoring
In addition to Carnegie and Morgan’s contributions, two other Yellow Jackets also reached double figures. Ariadna Termis added 11 points along with a team-high six assists, while Inés Noguero matched her with another 11 points. The team’s overall performance included a powerful presence in the paint, where they outscored Winthrop 44-22 and dominated the rebounding battle, finishing with a 38-23 edge.
Looking Forward
With this resounding victory, head coach Nell Fortner’s squad is poised for continued success as they prepare for their next game. The Yellow Jackets will remain at home to face Georgia State at 7 p.m. on Friday, also part of a four-game homestand to kick off the season.
