Columbia Implements Enhanced Safety Measures for 155th South Carolina State Fair

Fairground safety measures in place, vibrant festive atmosphere.

Columbia, S.C. Prepares for the 155th South Carolina State Fair with Enhanced Safety Measures

The city of Columbia is set to welcome visitors to the 155th South Carolina State Fair beginning on Wednesday. With excitement in the air, safety remains a top priority, prompting significant changes for this year’s event.

New Security Protocols Introduced

In response to recent incidents at other fairs, the organizing committee has implemented stringent security measures. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott emphasized the necessity of these new protocols. After 5 PM daily, attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old to gain entry to the fair. This rule will be enforced throughout the event, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, when no unaccompanied minors will be allowed inside.

Sheriff Lott pointed out that unattended teenagers are often involved in unruly behavior at such gatherings. He remarked, “When we look at other fairs that have had issues, it’s usually unescorted teenagers just running wild.” This new policy aims to mitigate that risk by ensuring that a responsible adult is present.

Community Concerns Alleviated

Safety concerns intensified after a recent incident at the Orangeburg County Fair, where a shooting led to one injury and one arrest. Matt Laschuma, the head of security for the South Carolina State Fair, mentioned that previous events with similar issues prompted a reassessment of safety protocols. “Unattended youth are coming here causing trouble,” he stated. “This fair plans to treat safety in the parking lot just as seriously as inside the gates.”

The fair’s security team is committed to ensuring a safe environment for the estimated 400,000 attendees, focusing not only on activities inside the fairgrounds but also in surrounding areas.

Precautions Beyond Entry

In addition to the new age policy, fair officials have also revised the rules regarding bag entries. Attendees will now be allowed to bring only clear bags into the fairgrounds, eliminating small clutch bags from entry. These restrictions are intended to facilitate quicker inspections and enhance the overall security of the event.

Laschuma reiterated the importance of these changes, stating, “All of the safety, security, time, energy, effort, goes into the one person that wants to show out.” The aim is to create a fun, family-friendly atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the festivities without fear of disruption.

Final Preparations Underway

With the fair just days away, final preparations are being completed. Organizers are working diligently to ensure all safety measures are in place before the gates open. The community looks forward to a lively event filled with rides, food, and entertainment, all while prioritizing public safety over the festivities.
