Fort Mill Gears Up for Major Interchange Project aimed at Alleviating Traffic Congestion

Fort Mill Interchange Project Poised for Advancement

A significant road project that could alleviate traffic congestion in the Fort Mill region is poised to advance. With an estimated budget of around $145 million, this project aims to improve urban mobility in this rapidly developing area.

Project Details and Expected Impacts

The Rock Hill Fort Mill Area Transportation Study (RFATS) has given the green light to the South Carolina Highway 160 – Interstate 77 Interchange Reconfiguration Project after a policy committee meeting was held this week. This project is set to take place in the Kingsley and Baxter vicinity. Should all go as planned, this will be the first project of this scale and complexity in the region, featuring two flyover bridges.

According to the Director of RFATS, David Hooper, the successful completion of this project will ease the stacking traffic off the interstate, thus benefiting commuters in the neighborhood. In conjunction with the interchange, RFATS plans to extend the Corridor – Sutton Road on the West to Highway 21 on the East from four lanes to six. This action is expected to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

Funding and Project Timeline

The hefty price tag for these projects, approximately $145 million, will be jointly funded by the State Infrastructure Bank, RFATS, and York County. A timeline outlining project milestones was also disclosed by the authorities. It is anticipated that all project work will be fully completed by 2027, with groundbreaking activities planned for February 2024.

Anticipation for Improved Traffic Conditions

The decision to move forward with this major road project has been met with anticipation, as it offers a promising resolution to the increasing traffic challenges faced by Fort Mill residents. As the Fort Mill region continues to grow and attract new residents and businesses, significant improvements in its transportation infrastructure are becoming increasingly crucial. The project promises to not only ease daily commutes but also improve the overall quality of life by reducing traffic-related stress and increasing transportation efficiency.

Community members, commuters, and local businesses are all watching the project’s progress closely, hopeful for its potential to transform the region’s transportation landscape. As Fort Mill continues its journey towards becoming a more accessible, congestion-free, and vibrant city, this road project marks a significant step in the right direction.
