Talford Earns Big South Player of the Week Recognition
In an announcement from the league’s office on Monday afternoon, Winthrop University’s senior forward, Kelton Talford, has been named the Big South Conference Player of the Week.
Impressive Week for Talford
During a 2-0 week that saw Winthrop remain undefeated in Big South play, Talford led the Eagles with an impressive average of 20.0 points per game and 6.0 rebounds. In addition to his scoring prowess, Talford also contributed a significant 3.5 assists each game, showcasing his versatility on the court.
The Eagles’ road win against Presbyterian last Wednesday saw Talford score 13 points, secure six rebounds, and contribute a career-high four assists. His performance on Saturday only further cemented his deserving place for the weekly honor.
Triple Overtime Heroics
In a thrilling triple-overtime victory against Radford, the forward again led his team to victory, scoring a season-high of 27 points. Crucially, Talford scored 13 points in the second and third OTs, helping the Eagles recover from a 15-point deficit.
With less than a minute remaining in the second overtime, Talford’s clutch hook shot evened the game at 81-81. Moreover, when the Eagles were down 86-84 in the third and decisive overtime, Talford displayed impeccable athleticism, scoring seven unmatched points in succession to hand the Eagles a lead that would ultimately secure the win at 91-88.
For the week, Talford shot 61.9 percent from the field and 70.0 from the free-throw line.
Second Player of the Week Honor for Talford
This is Talford’s second Big South Player of the Week award for his collegiate career, with his first recognition dating back to December 12, 2022. His outstanding performances on the court make him an essential asset to the team and an exciting player to watch during the remainder of the Big South play.
