Mother Charged Months After Neonatal Death in Rock Hill
A Tragic Tale of Newborn Loss
In the city of Rock Hill, South Carolina, a mother was arrested and charged several months after the death of her newborn. The mother, 31-year-old Jessica Medlin, gave birth to her child on August 28, 2023, at the Piedmont Medical Center. Shortly after being welcomed into the world, the newborn was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and tragically passed away merely two hours later.
The Investigation and Findings
Upon the unfortunate passing of the newborn, the law enforcement officers initiated an investigation to decipher the cause of the tragic event. Pathologists also proceeded with an examination, the results of which were turned over to the detectives in February, almost 6 months after the incident.
The comprehensive pathology report came back with unsettling findings— the newborn had both methamphetamine and fentanyl in his system. Intriguingly, according to police records, Medlin did not appear to possess any documented prescriptions for either of these substances.
Unlawful Conduct Leading to Death
Following the findings of the pathology report, Lancaster County law enforcement located Medlin on March 11, almost a year after the tragic incident. Charged with the unlawful conduct towards a child leading to death, Medlin was taken to the Rock Hill Police Department this past Monday.
