Mankato, Minnesota — Former high school football coach and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is set to take the stage as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday. Walz, who famously led the Mankato West football team to a state championship in 1999, is proud of his roots in coaching, which he attributes to his early political success.
Born in West Point, Nebraska, Walz began his journey in education and sports after graduating from Chadron State College in 1989. He initially took a teaching position in China before returning to the U.S. to coach and teach at Alliance High School. While there, he met his wife Gwen, also getting involved in coaching girls’ basketball.
When Walz arrived at Mankato West, the football team had faced a dismal three-year losing streak. However, under his guidance as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the team turned its fortunes around, achieving an impressive eight-game winning streak before clinching the Class 4A state title. After coaching until 2002, Walz transitioned to a political career, emphasizing his teaching background and dedication to education as critical tools in his success in the electoral arena. Walz attributes his 2006 congressional victory to the respect he earned as a coach.
