Arlington, VA – Last month, Craig Esherick, a former athlete and head coach, achieved a significant milestone as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at his high school, Springbrook High School, located in Silver Spring. The induction ceremony took place on October 19 at Argyle Country Club and was a moment of celebration for Esherick, who was one of nine honorees recognized for their contributions.
Esherick, a graduate of Springbrook’s class of 1974, made a name for himself in boys basketball during his time at the school. He recalls, “I feel very lucky to have played for Springbrook and for good coaches along the way. It was so much fun, with great memories.” Known for his capability as an outside shooter, he earned numerous accolades including all-county and all-state honors. Additionally, he earned all-Met recognition from prominent local newspapers.
In his senior year, Esherick averaged 18 points per game and scored a career-high of 38 points in one game, along with 26 points in his final high school appearance, which was a loss in the Maryland state tournament semifinals. During his three years of varsity play, Esherick helped lead the Blue Devils to county championships and appearances in the state tournament.
After high school, he took his talent to Georgetown University, where he not only played basketball for four seasons but also went on to become an assistant coach before eventually taking on the role of head coach for the Hoyas. Esherick has been acknowledged for his significant contributions to the sport, previously being honored with induction into the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame in 2022. He and his wife, Theo Stamos, a former Commonwealth’s Attorney, are proud parents of two sons, both of whom played basketball for Yorktown High School.
Esherick’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiration for young athletes in the community, showcasing the impact that dedication and hard work can have in sports.
