On Saturday afternoon, the Winthrop Eagles concluded their three-game Big South series at UNC Asheville by dropping both games of a doubleheader. The Eagles fell by final scores of 4-1 and 14-7, moving their overall record to 14-23-1 with a 4-11 standing in the Big South.
In the first game, Chancellor Jennings stood out with a 2-4 performance, scoring a run and hitting two doubles. Despite his efforts, the Eagles were unable to secure a win as they fell to UNC Asheville. Colby Guy picked up the win for the Bulldogs, while Reese Lumpkin took the loss for Winthrop.
UNC Asheville took control early in the game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Winthrop had opportunities to score but failed to capitalize, leaving runners on base in crucial situations. The Eagles managed to score a run in the eighth inning but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs’ lead.
Chancellor Jennings continued his strong performance in the second game, going 2-3 with a run scored and two doubles. Harrison Wilson also had a notable game, contributing two hits and scoring two runs for Winthrop. However, the Eagles fell short as Cole Schiff earned the win for UNC Asheville.
The Eagles took an early lead in the second game but UNC Asheville responded with a six-run inning to pull ahead. Winthrop tried to rally back but the Bulldogs extended their lead with timely hits throughout the game. Despite their efforts, the Eagles were unable to overcome UNC Asheville’s strong offense.
Winthrop will have a chance to bounce back as they prepare to host Charlotte in a rematch on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 4:00 p.m. The Eagles will look to avenge their earlier loss to the 49ers and showcase their resilience on the field.
