ROCK HILL, S.C. – A dark cloud hung over the Rock Hill community this past weekend, as news broke of the tragic passing of 29-year-old Jalen Benjamin, a beloved baseball coach at Legion Collegiate Academy. Known affectionately among his friends and players as “J-Rock,” Benjamin’s life was cut short in a car accident while he was driving to a game early Saturday morning.
Many in the community are heartbroken as they remember Benjamin not just as a coach, but as a remarkable young man with a gentle spirit that made a lasting impact on everyone he met. Mike Drummond, the LCA athletic director, spoke highly of him, stating that Benjamin had a unique ability to connect with his student-athletes. “His bond with his players was always uplifting and positive,” Drummond explained. “We will truly miss his presence, his kind spirit, and his big smile!”
For the players at Legion Collegiate Academy, Benjamin was more than just a coach; he was a mentor and a friend. His love for the game of baseball was infectious, and his practical wisdom and encouragement helped many young athletes grow both on and off the field. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through the countless lives he touched and the inspiration he provided.
According to reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the unfortunate accident occurred when Benjamin was traveling east on Interstate 20, near Camden. His pickup truck was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. The impact caused his truck to rear-end another vehicle, which ultimately led to both cars running off the road. Tragically, his truck flipped, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It’s difficult to process how quickly life can change. One moment, Benjamin was on his way to coach and inspire, and the next, he was gone. The Rock Hill community is now grappling with this immense loss, and it serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has rallied together, demonstrating the strength and resilience that defines Rock Hill. Plans are already in motion to honor Benjamin’s memory with the establishment of a scholarship in his name at Legion Collegiate Academy. This scholarship will not only keep his spirit alive but will also support future generations of young athletes who aspire to follow in his footsteps.
Furthermore, a GoFundMe page has been set up to assist his family with funeral costs. The local community has shown incredible support, rallying to help in any way they can during this difficult time. Acts of kindness—big and small—are flowing in, reflecting how much Benjamin meant to so many.
The funeral service for Jalen Benjamin is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, at 2 p.m. It will take place at Oakdale Baptist Church in Rock Hill. This gathering will serve as an opportunity for friends, family, and members of the community to come together, share memories, and celebrate the life of a remarkable young man.
As Rock Hill navigates this difficult time, the outpouring of love and support for Benjamin’s family and friends reminds everyone of the profound impact a single life can have on many. David Bowie once said, “We can be heroes,” and Jalen Benjamin certainly was a hero to many young athletes in Rock Hill, inspiring them to reach for their dreams both on and off the field. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
