In an unusual mix of fear, panic and calm, South Carolina Democrats grappled with President Joe Biden’s disappointing performance in the recent debate ahead of the November general elections. The emotional pendulum swung from optimism to shock as Biden mumbled his way through the debate against former President Donald Trump, leaving many questioning his capabilities as the party’s nominee.
Charleston County Democratic Party Chair, Sam Skardon, conveyed his dismay through a series of text messages received during the debate, demonstrating a general sentiment of unease amongst supporters. Similarly, Democratic state senator Dick Harpootlian openly questioned the preparation program administered to the president ahead of the debate, suggesting a mandatory nap and a throat lozenge for Biden.
Christale Spain, S.C. Democratic Party Chair, put on a brave face following the debate. Although acknowledging Biden’s lackluster performance, she reassured supporters of his capabilities and achievements during his term. “He’s done a good job. His administration is a success. Is he the best messenger for that? Probably not,” Spain said.
The atmosphere was tense as South Carolina Democrats, who had pledged their unwavering support in the first ballots for Biden’s re-election bid, watched the 81-year-old contender stumble and mutter his way through the hour-long debate. This raised renewed questions about Biden’s fitness to serve, shifting the national discourse among Democrats.
However, South Carolina’s only Democratic congressperson, U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, came to Biden’s defense, counseling anxious Democrats to “chill out.” Rallying behind Biden, Clyburn encouraged the president to “stay the course,” asserting there was “no better Democrat.”
Other Democrats, while expressing their disappointment, have not abandoned Biden. Despite the setback, they continue to believe in his potential to lead the nation, echoing Skardon’s sentiment that, “His character is there. His positions on the issues are right for the country.”
Biden marked his Raleigh campaign rally on Jun 28, attempting to dispel concerns about his capability in light of the recent debate debacle. Defending his halting speech and struggling debater persona, he stated, “I know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. I know how to do this job.”
Although the recent blow has ruffled many feathers, South Carolina Democrats have rallied behind their party’s choice. With another debate on the horizon, they not only anticipate a comeback from Biden but also believe his character and principles stand as a stark contrast to his Republican rival, Donald Trump.
