Broward Education Foundation Honors Exceptional Athletes at 2024 Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Hollywood, Florida – The Broward Education Foundation recently celebrated the remarkable achievements of seven exceptional athletes and sports figures during the 2024 Broward County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The event took place at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort and included a festive cocktail reception and dinner, highlighting the achievements of this year’s inductees.

Among the honorees were Elliot Bonner, a dedicated football and baseball coach with over 50 years of involvement in Broward County Public Schools, and Darius Butler, a former NFL cornerback turned sports personality. Each inductee shared inspiring journeys, reflecting the rich sports culture within Broward County.

Abbas Karimi, a Paralympian swimmer who has made headlines for his incredible resilience, was recognized for his astonishing journey from a refugee to a medalist. Diana Nyad, who captured hearts worldwide with her historic swim from Cuba to Florida, and Steve Shapiro, a long-time local sportscaster, also joined the hall of fame.

The 1973 Hollywood Hills High School 4A State Championship Football Team was likewise honored for their groundbreaking achievement, showcasing not just athletic talent but a commitment to teamwork and community spirit. Coach Dick Saltrick led the Spartans to a remarkable undefeated season, making history in Broward County.

“These 2024 Sports Hall of Fame inductees represent an extraordinary class,” said James A. Knapp, President and CEO of the Broward Education Foundation. “Their legacy serves as an inspiration to both our students and the broader community.”

Shawn Cerra, the Director of Broward Education Foundation Athletics, expressed gratitude to sponsors and community partners for reviving this important event after a six-year hiatus, highlighting the need to celebrate local athletic legends.

Each inductee will be enshrined on the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame Honor Wall at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, ensuring their legacy will inspire future generations of athletes.
