Cherokee County, S.C – A tragic accident recently occurred near Chesnee in Cherokee County, resulting in two fatalities and leaving a 6-year-old child injured. The deadly incident happened when two cars collided on Hwy 221-A, as confirmed by the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office.
According to the Cherokee County Coroner, the unfortunate incident took place when a 2008 Honda Civic was heading north on Hwy 221-A near Chesnee around 3:45 p.m. The vehicle crossed the center line near the intersection of Scruggs Trail and collided head-on with a southbound 2023 Honda Civic.
The driver of the 2008 Honda Civic, who tragically was not wearing a seat belt, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The coroner identified the driver as 32-year-old Veronica Carol Proctor, a resident of Lawrenceville, GA.
The second car involved in the crash was driven by Detra Geter, 37, of Spartanburg along with her 6-year-old daughter. Both the mother and the daughter were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment following the crash. Regrettably, Detra Geter passed away from her injuries on August 1. The condition of the 6-year-old girl is not disclosed yet.
The Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy later this week to determine Geter’s precise cause of death. At this stage, there is no further information available about any potential underlying factors that might have contributed to this fatal accident.
This tragic incident underlines the necessity of adherable road safety measures like adhering to speed limits, practicing defensive driving, and importantly, using seat belts. Non-use of seat belts significantly increases the risk of fatal injury in accidents, as was the case with the unfortunate incident involving Veronica Carol Proctor.
State authorities and local law enforcement agencies continually stress the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations to prevent accidents like these. They emphasize strict adherence to speed limits, use of seat belts, and avoiding distractions while driving. They also urge drivers to stay extra cautious while driving near intersections, as these are hotspots for potential collisions, like in this incident.
Our sincere sympathies and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of Veronica Carol Proctor and Detra Geter during this immensely difficult time. It is indeed overwhelming to process such a tragic loss. Authorities are urging anyone with information or who might have witnessed the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
