Catawba Nation Shines with New Assistant Chief Patricia Leach!
Exciting times are unfolding in the Catawba Nation, as the vibrant community near Rock Hill has welcomed Patricia Leach as its new assistant chief! This remarkable feat, accomplished in August 2023, marks a significant milestone, making her the highest-ranking woman in the Catawba Nation’s modern history. It seems the winds of change are blowing, and Patricia is ready to take the reins!
A Future Full of Promise
The Catawba Nation, home to approximately 3,300 members, is governed by a five-member executive committee elected directly by the tribal members. Patricia, who grew up on what she fondly considers “the poores of the poor” side of the reservation, knows firsthand what it means to overcome challenges. Her childhood home had a dirt floor, but she didn’t let those humble beginnings deter her. She obtained her GED at the young age of 16 and went on to earn a master’s degree in business administration and human resource management.
Three years prior to her election, fellow tribe members encouraged her to run for office. Patricia has held various positions within the Catawba Nation, including administrative assistant for economic development and human resources director, proving that her passion for community service is strong.
Patricia’s Vision for the Catawba Nation
In her new role, Patricia is on a mission to improve living conditions for community members. She has already launched a program aimed at updating or rebuilding dilapidated housing for families on the reservation, with six homes improved, including her own mother’s, providing much-needed relief for seniors and those in critical need.
Patricia isn’t just focused on housing—she’s also revitalized a charity foundation, previously just an idea on paper, into a robust organization. This foundation has already provided over $800,000 for various programs and charitable organizations, showcasing her commitment to uplifting those around her.
Building Bridges—Literally!
Recently, a new bridge was inaugurated to bolster economic development efforts by linking Rivercrest Road to Sturgis Road. Additionally, plans are in motion to construct two dozen new homes to help address the growing backlog of families eagerly awaiting to move onto the reservation. How exciting is that?
Educating the next generation is also at the forefront of Patricia’s agenda. Plans are being finalized to establish a new school with a K-12 structure centered around a strong STEM curriculum. This initiative aims to cultivate a brighter future for the children of the community, something Patricia is deeply passionate about.
Empowering Future Leaders
As she steps into her new role, Patricia is determined to pave the way for future women in leadership and politics within the Catawba Nation. Working alongside Chief Brian Harris, she has been actively involved in identifying and addressing community needs through various initiatives.
Giving Back to the Community
The Catawba Two Kings Casino, where Patricia serves as assistant chief, shows their commitment to the community by donating $20,000 through its Share Change program. Local organizations are benefiting greatly, with each receiving $5,000. This includes organizations such as Compassion to Act, the United Way of Cleveland County, Washington Outreach Ministry, and Common Ground Café.
Washington Outreach Ministry stands out as the largest emergency food pantry in Cleveland County, serving over 15,000 clients each month. Meanwhile, Common Ground Café provides meals on a pay-what-you-can basis, addressing unavoidable food insecurity issues. Patricia’s dedication to these organizations aligns with her commitment to uplifting her community.
With Patricia Leach at the helm of leadership, the Catawba Nation is not only breaking barriers but also leading the way toward a progressive and flourishing future. The community can look forward to exciting developments ahead, all spearheaded by their tireless assistant chief!
