News Summary

The Catawba Nation has successfully purchased nearly 200 acres of land in Rock Hill for $9 million. This acquisition enhances their existing landholdings and is part of a broader effort to support local development. The land is located adjacent to the tribe’s existing reservation and opens up opportunities for future economic growth. Although specific plans have yet to be disclosed, the tribe aims to connect economic development with over 100 acres in the Green Earth area, which is set for new businesses and housing projects.

Rock Hill Welcomes New Land Acquisition by Catawba Nation

Exciting news has come to Rock Hill as the Catawba Nation announced its recent purchase of nearly 200 acres of land. This significant acquisition wrapped up on January 15 for a cool $9 million and is located adjacent to the northern part of the tribe’s existing reservation.

A Closer Look at the New Property

The newly acquired land consists of two properties along Mintwood Lane, situated just south of Sturgis Road and east of Whitehorse Road. Combined, these parcels of land tally approximately 195 acres. This acquisition also enhances the tribe’s existing Green Earth parcel, which encompasses about 296 acres and houses tribal government buildings and homes.

For those wondering about the geographical layout, the Catawba Nation’s reservation is primarily divided into two main sections: one larger 710-acre main reservation situated to the south, and the Green Earth site, located to the north, both of which kiss the shores of the serene Catawba River.

Growing Landholdings in York County

This purchase is part of a greater initiative by the Catawba Nation to bolster their landholdings throughout York County, which now amounts to over 1,500 acres since this recent buy. The tribe has actively worked on acquiring additional properties in this area, as they expand their presence and assist in local development efforts.

The newly purchased land was previously owned by John Hardin, a cherished civic leader and former mayor of Rock Hill. Hardin was instrumental in the establishment of notable local landmarks, such as Glencairn Gardens and the city’s airport. The tribe’s acquisition of his former properties adds a new chapter to both the land and the community’s rich history.

A Historical Perspective

144,000 acres of land by England. However, as they faced forced relocations from federal authorities, they traded land for a smaller reservation. The Catawba Nation was federally recognized in 1993, which allowed them to establish their current 710-acre reservation officially.

The tribe also boasts properties across the border in North Carolina, including land designated for the wildly popular Catawba Two Kings Casino, which opened a temporary location a few years back and is now working on expanding even further.
