As the NFL preseason wraps up, all eyes are on the roster cuts that will take place across the league. Each of the 32 teams is set to trim their offseason rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 27. With this deadline approaching, teams are preparing to make some tough decisions that could see several notable players released.
Among the players who may find themselves looking for new teams is Taylor Heinicke, once a gutsy starter for the Washington Commanders. Currently, he’s been relegated to the No. 3 spot with the Atlanta Falcons, where the team appears to be set with first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. as the primary backup. Heinicke could fit in well as an experienced No. 2 for teams such as the Buccaneers, Lions, or Vikings.
Another player to watch is Desmond Ridder. The third-round pick from the Falcons was picked up in a trade, but he’s struggling to secure a spot in Arizona. With rising star Clayton Tune backing up Kyler Murray, Ridder may find opportunities with the Buccaneers, Packers, or Rams.
The Denver Broncos are also facing some tough choices. They signed veteran running back Samaje Perine to a two-year deal, but with less than 300 yards in his first season, he may find himself out of favor. His future might lie with the Buccaneers or Raiders.
In Kansas City, Kadarius Toney has been battling injuries, making him a candidate for release. Coach Andy Reid notes that Toney is behind several other receivers, putting his chances of sticking with the team in jeopardy. Possible landing spots for Toney include the Colts, Chargers, or Steelers.
Meanwhile, James Bradberry is looking for new opportunities after transitioning from cornerback to safety with the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Eagles looking to showcase young talent, Bradberry could be on the move to a team like the Cardinals, Commanders, or Raiders.
Lastly, Lewis Cine, a first-round pick from 2022, has been sidelined due to injuries and faces a crowded secondary in Minnesota. With veterans now in the mix, his chances for a spot look slim. Possible new homes could be the Commanders, Eagles, or 49ers.
As the deadline looms, fans and teams alike are anticipating which players might soon be on the move and where they will end up.
