Winthrop launched into their game against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers with an intensity that saw them make five shots in a row. Fueled by the red-hot shooting of K.J. Doucet, the Eagles smoothly cruised to a 78-59 win on Wednesday evening, marking a further advancement in the Big South Conference men’s basketball action.
The first half belonged to the Eagles, whose 16-0 run was ignited by a layup from Micheal Anumba. This whirlwind performance made it impossible for Charleston Southern to regroup, even against Taje’ Kelly’s block efforts and Kalib Clinton’s attacking penetration. The high shooting percentage of 58 percent enabled the Eagles to build a solid lead of 41-21 heading into halftime.
The second half saw Doucet continuing his brilliant performance. He successfully turned a potentially tricky situation – retrieving a loose ball with the shot clock nearing zero – into a scoring opportunity, netting a three-point play to push the Eagles’ lead to 50-25. However, Charleston Southern did not go down without a fight, initiating a 12-2 run to cut back on the Eagles’ substantial lead. Yet Doucet responded swiftly, launching himself down the lane for a layup to halt Charleston Southern’s surge.
Riding on the back of 11 for 12 shots from the field and three for four behind the arc, Doucet was the standout performer, scoring a season-high 28 points. Meanwhile, Alex Timmerman provided valuable support from the bench, bringing in 17 points with an eight for 10 shooting effort.
The Eagles demonstrated a solid shooting performance with a 58 percent field goal percentage in the first and second half and held the Buccaneers to just 33 percent. Furthermore, the Eagles dominated the paint, scoring 52 points and maintaining a 37-18 advantage in bench points.
The win marked Winthrop’s eighth consecutive victory over Charleston Southern and the eighth straight win at the Buc Dome. Looking forward, Winthrop will leverage their momentum as they prepare to host the High Point game at the Winthrop Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 27.
