On Friday, February 14, the school’s principal, Lori Phillips, officially announced her resignation amidst rising pressure from parents calling for a significant change at the top. In an email sent to parents, the superintendent of Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools, Gregory Monroe, highlighted the pressing need for a renewed focus on teaching and learning within the institution. This came as a response to what many perceived as a troubling management situation.
A significant part of the controversy began with a recent decision to change the school’s accreditation, which left many parents feeling blindsided. The switch from Cognia, a global non-religious accreditation program, to Lumen, the Catholic University of America’s version, raised eyebrows, with numerous families voicing their fears about potential declines in college-preparation standards and overall educational quality. Parents had hoped for clear communication on such a vital issue, but many felt that information was lacking.
The resignation followed a wave of frustration from parents who felt isolated and unheard in the school community. Parents described a culture problem at the school, exacerbated by comments from Phillips that suggested parents contributed to the very issues they were raising. This did not sit well with the community, and many felt further alienated from school leadership.
This wasn’t the first time Phillips found herself in a challenging situation. Back in September, she faced backlash for remarks made about female students wearing their uniforms, which were widely deemed insensitive. The controversies seemed to pile on, with parents often expressing concerns regarding staff departures and curriculum quality that left them unsettled.
In light of Phillips’ departure, the President of Charlotte Catholic, Kurt Telford, will be taking on the dual role of principal and president for the remainder of this school year and the following one. Telford’s leadership will be pivotal as the school embarks on the search for a new principal, with plans to appoint someone by the summer of 2026. The community is eager to see a fresh face who can help heal the wounds and rebuild trust.
Moving forward, there are plans to involve families in a more meaningful way. Monroe has assured parents that the administration will consult them this spring to better understand their vision for Charlotte Catholic High School, aiming to strengthen parent engagement and feedback mechanisms. This is a step that many hope will restore a sense of community and collaboration moving forward.
The school has also faced scrutiny regarding student behavior, particularly surrounding incidents of bullying within the football team that led to suspensions and expulsions.
