Charlotte, N.C. — In the heart of Charlotte, local activists are stepping up to tackle the pressing issue of animal homelessness with the Clear the Shelters initiative. This nationwide movement aims to find loving homes for pets in need and is taking center stage in our community. Running now through September 10th, the campaign seeks to raise awareness and encourage residents to adopt furry friends from local shelters.
The Heart of the Matter
We recently had a chance to connect with two passionate advocates for animal welfare: Dr. Susan Bonilla, the owner of Passionate Paws Animal Hospital, and Danielle Spuler, the president of South Charlotte Dog Rescue (SCDR). Their dedication to improving the lives of our four-legged companions is truly inspiring. “Right now it is so important to help Clear the Shelters post-COVID because of the overabundance of animals we all have,” explained Spuler. The need in our community is real, with many pets facing uncertain futures due to pet overpopulation and the unfortunate effects of backyard breeding.
Understanding the Need
South Charlotte Dog Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill volunteer organization committed to rescuing dogs in need. Whether it’s animals in public shelters at risk of euthanasia or those surrendered by their owners due to difficult circumstances, SCDR works tirelessly to find these animals loving homes where they can thrive. Along with fostering and providing medical care, they ensure that each dog receives the love and attention they deserve.
Choosing the Right Companion

Dr. Bonilla shared some insightful advice for potential pet parents. “When getting a pet, you need to consider what type of lifestyle you have. Are you busy and on the go, or do you have ample time to devote to a pet? What about the breed? Do you prefer a laid-back companion or a high-energy playmate? And let’s not forget about kids – do you have them, or plan to in the future? Each of these factors plays a crucial role in ensuring you find the perfect fit for your household.”
Additionally, it’s essential to think about practical aspects like having a fenced yard, being ready for daily walks, and understanding the medical needs of your future pet, including vaccinations and spaying or neutering status.
Meet and Greet Your Future Best Friend
As part of the Clear the Shelters campaign, Dr. Bonilla and Spuler introduced us to two adorable mascots of the rescue mission: Kingsley and Nymeria. Kingsley is the longest-residing pup at SCDR, while Nymeria is Dr. Bonilla’s own furry companion, adopted from the same organization. “They are living proof of what is possible when you adopt from shelters,” she said, her eyes lighting up with joy. “We are urging everyone to participate in the Clear the Shelters event, which will take place on the 7th at the Passionate Paws location in Matthews.”
This event is a fantastic opportunity for potential adopters to come and meet the animals, so you can see firsthand if your home is a comfortable fit for a new furry friend.
