Tragic Collision on I-485 Causes Major Traffic Shutdown

In a dreadful turn of events, a major vehicular accident in northeast Charlotte forced the closure of the I-485 on Friday, resulting in the death of one individual and serious injury to another. The crash involved two tractor-trailers and three other vehicles.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the collision occurred on the outer loop between Mallard Creek Road and Prosperity Church Road. Police reports indicate that the initial collision happened between a car and a tractor-trailer on the inner loop. This crash forced the tractor-trailer to veer off-center, bursting through the median cables and into the path of oncoming traffic on the outer loop. A head-on collision with a second tractor-trailer followed this.

Following the aforementioned collision, another passenger vehicle on the outer loop hit one of the tractor-trailers, intensifying the already devastating situation.

Casualties and Injuries

The first tractor-trailer’s driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Four other individuals involved in the accident were evaluated at the scene, but did not require hospitalization. The second tractor-trailer’s driver survived the incident but is currently in a critical condition and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention.

In the aftermath of the collision, lanes were blocked in both directions on the interstate, leading to a significant disruption of traffic.

Investigation Underway

As of now, investigators have ruled out speed as a contributing factor to this fatal incident. However, the investigation is still ongoing, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol working tirelessly to get to the bottom of the incident. Pending the outcome of their investigation, charges may be laid accordingly.
