Charlotte, NC – The vibrant community of Charlotte served as the backdrop for the 2024 Score Charlotte “Pitch for Growth” competition, where entrepreneurs showcased their innovative ideas for a chance to win funding and recognition. Held on Thursday at the prestigious Mint Museum, local businesses highlighted their potential in front of a panel of judges and an engaged audience.
Tanisha Burke, the owner of Malaysian Lights, emerged as the standout winner, taking home the grand prize of $5,000. Malaysian Lights specializes in a variety of handmade products including candles, wax melts, car diffusers, and room sprays, catering specifically to individuals with scent sensitivities. Burke’s passion for her craft resonated with both the judges and the audience, earning her the coveted People’s Choice Award as well.
This year’s competition took place at the Mint Museum on Randolph Road, a venue known for its support of arts and culture. The event attracted 150 applicants from 13 counties across North Carolina and three counties in South Carolina, showcasing a rich variety of small business ideas and ventures.
The purpose of the Pitch for Growth competition is to provide a platform for small business owners in the region to gain visibility and connect with local banking and marketing experts. Jim Chickarello, co-chair of the pitch competition, emphasized the importance of such opportunities. He stated, “This competition offers entrepreneurs a chance to gain valuable feedback as they develop their business and growth plans.”
Alongside Tanisha Burke, other notable winners were recognized, although specifics on those winners have yet to be disclosed. This competition marks the second consecutive year that US Bank has sponsored the event, reflecting their commitment to support local businesses and foster economic growth within the community.
As part of a larger mission, organizers aimed to uplift Black communities in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. The event not only focused on competition but also served as a networking opportunity for businesses to connect with one another and with potential investors.
Efforts to create such inclusive platforms for Black entrepreneurs rely heavily on community support. Donations play a crucial role in sustaining news and events that seek to empower local voices. A call to action was made for community members to contribute, highlighting that even a one-time gift can significantly underwrite future events and articles.
The success of this year’s Pitch for Growth competition illustrates a dedicated effort within Charlotte to uplift and empower its small business community. As highlighted by the participants, the positive feedback and the opportunity for exposure are vital for growth and success. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Charlotte, proving that the community stands firmly behind those who dare to dream and innovate.
