From within the buzzing city of Charlotte, North Carolina, a call for assistance is echoing across the internet. The plea is coming from a desperate mother whose daughter, Majesty Carr, is stranded in a hospital thousands of miles away in Turks and Caicos after a catastrophic car accident.
According to Karen McMillan, Carr’s mother, her daughter had journeyed to Turks and Caicos for a holiday. Carr was scheduled to return home on Tuesday. However, an unexpected car incident tossed her plans into disarray. The single-car crash left her with a fractured jaw and arm, a displaced hip, and internal bleeding.
McMillan revealed that local medical practitioners in Turks and Caicos deemed Carr unfit to take commercial flights back to the United States due to her internal injuries and the high altitudes associated with commercial flights. Therefore, for Carr to return home, she would need to be airlifted—a process that costs around $25,000.
Following the distressing news, McMillan has launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking funds to cover the steep cost of her daughter’s medical transport. She is imploring the community to ‘get her home’ so Carr can receive care from medical professionals in Charlotte. McMillan says she is distressed that no one is nearer to monitor her child’s progress and ensure everything goes as planned. The anguish in her voice as she spoke of her desire for her daughter’s return was palpable.
Travel insurance, often an afterthought for many holiday-goers, takes center stage in the tragedy. In interviews, travel agent Karen Utsey emphasized the critical nature of travel insurance. Aside from covering lost luggage or canceled flights, she pointed out that travel insurance could also aid in severe medical situations similar to Carr’s.
She elaborated that travel insurance not only covers costs related to typical travel setbacks, such as lost luggage or trip cancellation but it could also provide support in extreme medical emergencies that may necessitate special flights to return the patient to their home country.
In addition, Utsey recommended that travelers should ensure to have a person who is aware of their travel itinerary and to carry medications in a personal hand-carry bag, precautions that would potentially prove invaluable during unforeseen circumstances.
In the face of this daunting situation, McMillan remains hopeful, leaning heavily on her faith for her daughter’s safe return. She firmly believes and is counting on her prayers to get her daughter back home soon.
As the family grapples with these nerve-wracking circumstances and awaits their loved one’s return, the GoFundMe campaign serves as a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of community support in times of crisis.
