As temperatures drop and snow begins to fall, several school districts in the Charlotte region are shifting to eLearning. This includes Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Clover, York, Lancaster, and Chester County districts, which are all canceling in-person classes and activities for the safety of students and staff. Additionally, various other schools in the area are also making similar adjustments. Families are encouraged to stay warm and safe while learning from home as winter weather impacts the region.
Hey there, Charlotte! As the temperatures drop and snow flurries start to swirl, many school districts in our area are making changes to their schedules. If you were looking forward to another day filled with fun classes and activities, think again! This Friday, winter weather is bringing an eLearning day for most schools, which means students will be learning from home instead of heading back to the classroom.
First up, the Rock Hill School District has decided to have an eLearning day on Friday, meaning all students will stay home and learn remotely. But don’t plan on any after-school fun! All extracurricular activities for both Friday and Saturday are canceled for the safety of everyone involved. It’s a cozy day to learn in pajamas!
Moving on to the Fort Mill School District, they’re also shutting their doors this Friday and switching to eLearning. Just like Rock Hill, after-school activities, including sports, are off the table. Facilities will remain closed on Saturday, so don’t consider swinging by.
The Clover School District is joining the trend by offering remote learning without live instruction on Friday. That means students will receive assignments but won’t be sitting in front of their teachers. However, school staff will still be available online for support if needed. In a similar vein, athletic events on both Friday and Saturday have been canceled.
Not to be left out, the York School District is also transitioning to remote learning on Friday and has decided to cancel all athletic events for that day as well as Saturday. Safety first!
The Lancaster County School District is closing its doors on Friday, transitioning to eLearning as well. All facilities will be closed, and any scheduled events from Friday through Sunday have been axed.
Over in the Chester County School District, remote learning is becoming a reality for Friday, with all district facilities closing from Friday through Sunday. Students will continue their education with some assignments but won’t have the face-to-face lessons we’ve all grown used to.
Meanwhile, York Prep will have a half-day on Friday, with younger grades dismissed at 11:30 a.m. and older grades at noon. However, all after-school activities are off this Friday. Legion Collegiate Academy is also adjusting its plans and postponing all basketball games that were scheduled for Friday, with Saturday’s girls game now moved to February. Riverwalk Academy will send students home early on Friday too, with younger grades finishing at 11:05 a.m. and older ones at 11:30 a.m. Just like other districts, all after-school activities have been canceled.
Of course, we can’t forget about the winter storm watch that’s taken over the area. Snow is expected before 2 p.m. on Friday with an 80% chance of mixed precipitation afterward. The National Weather Service is predicting freezing rain and sleet to keep things chilly, with a low temperature of 29 degrees. As for Saturday, expect a chance of sleet before 7 a.m. and a high of 42 degrees, while nighttime will bring it back down to a frosty low of 19 degrees.
Don’t think we’re alone in this – various school districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, Cabarrus County Schools, Catawba County Schools, Gaston County Schools, and many more, are also closing or moving to remote learning. It looks like a winter wonderland has halted numerous athletic and extracurricular activities through the weekend.
So, whether you’re learning from home in your warmest blanket or taking a break from sports, stay safe and warm, everyone! Keep an eye on the weather and enjoy your cozy eLearning day!
