Winter Wonderland Alert in Charlotte Area Schools

Charlotte, we’ve got some big changes coming your way this week as a winter storm watch has been issued for many of our beloved counties across the Carolinas. With chilly temperatures and a touch of snow predicted, schools are coming together to make sure students stay safe while keeping their education on track.

School Districts Make the Call

As the skies prepare to sprinkle a bit of winter magic, local school districts are stepping up to announce some schedule changes. It looks like we could see up to 5 inches of snow in the mountains and areas north of the Interstate 40 corridor. For our friends in the Piedmont region, anticipate a blend of snow and ice with up to 2 inches expected to fall, and possibly even more in some spots. So, grab your hot cocoa and snuggle up; winter is definitely in the air!

Starting this Friday, January 10, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be pivoting to a remote learning day. Those important assignments will be sent home on Thursday, January 9, so be sure to check your backpacks! There won’t be any after-school activities or athletic events on Friday, but don’t fret – in-person classes will kick back into gear on Monday, January 13.

Other Schools Get On Board

Turning our gaze to the neighboring districts, Cabarrus County Schools will officially be closed on Friday, and here’s a bonus: no make-up day will be necessary thanks to those extra hours tucked into the school calendar. All activities are canceled from Friday through Sunday, January 12, so enjoy your cozy weekend.

Catawba County Schools are also shutting their doors on Friday, although there’s an optional teacher workday. If you were looking forward to the district-wide spelling bee, think again, as it’s been postponed until February 7. Chester County Schools will follow suit with remote learning on Friday, closing all district facilities through Sunday.

Over in the Clover School District, students will log on for e-learning this Friday. Teachers will be available online to assist from 8 to 11:30 a.m., so keep those questions handy! The Fort Mill School District reports that their facilities will also be closed, and students should look out for specific e-learning instructions from their individual schools.

Attendance Adjustments Across the Board

It’s a similar story across the area, with Gaston County Schools hosting a remote learning day and canceling all school events, including athletics, for the weekend. Hickory City Schools will be sharing assignments and instructions through online platforms, ensuring students stay connected, while Iredell-Statesville Schools will also conduct remote learning without the need for in-person attendance.

Further south, Kannapolis City Schools announced a closure for Friday, and Lancaster County School District will move to e-learning with facilities remaining closed through Sunday.

Meanwhile, Lincoln County Schools will give students a break on Friday, though staff have the option for a workday. Mooresville Graded School District will also close its buildings and focus on remote learning, while Rock Hill Schools, worried about road conditions, will transition to e-learning for Friday, cancelling all extracurricular activities for the weekend.

Lastly, Union County Public Schools are closed on Friday with no remote instruction, and all facilities will be closed, along with activities. The York School District will implement remote learning as well, ensuring that students stay safe while keeping learning alive.

Be Prepared for the Conditions

With a winter storm watch spanning the coast and the northern half of North Carolina, it’s important to stay informed about the weather. Areas south of Charlotte might only see a light dusting, while northern and western regions could be looking at one to two inches. Snow-capped mountains are expected to receive two to four inches, and with the possibility of up to a quarter-inch of ice, be cautious – it could mean damage to tree branches and power lines, possibly causing power outages.

So, get those snowsuits ready, Charlotte! Stay warm, stay safe, and embrace the winter fun while keeping up with your studies online. Let’s make the most of this chilly weather together!
