CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 16-year-old has been arrested and faces several serious charges following the tragic shooting death of a 17-year-old in Ballantyne. Detectives have stated that the incident has deeply affected the local community.
On August 13, around 8 a.m., Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) responded to a welfare check at an apartment complex located on Wynhollow Downs Lane. This site is near the intersection of Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Lancaster Highway.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of Aryan Singh Jaswal, who had been pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations revealed that Singh was likely asleep in a car when he was shot. Major J.D. Thomas, leading the case, described the neighborhood as “very quiet” and emphasized the unusual nature of such violent crimes occurring in the area.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed due to their age, was apprehended in Conway, South Carolina, on October 11. Authorities have charged the teen with several offenses, including murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
The Ballantyne community is grappling with the fallout from this incident. Residents frequently describe the locale as a safe and friendly environment, making the occurrence of such a crime even more unsettling.
Major Thomas noted the rarity of violent incidents in the area, stating, “It’s very unusual for us to have a crime like this out here.” This remark reflects the community’s shock and calls for heightened safety measures as law enforcement continues to explore the case.
Detectives are urging anyone with additional information regarding this case to reach out to Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Witnesses can also speak directly with homicide detectives by calling 704-432-TIPS.
The community’s emotional response to the loss of Singh is palpable, with many residents expressing their condolences and support for his family. Efforts are underway to share memories of Singh through community initiatives designed to honor his life rather than solely focus on the tragedy.
A local initiative, More Than A Number, has launched to help families affected by violence share the stories of their loved ones. This effort seeks to connect the community and also addresses the broader implications of violence in society.
As the investigation continues, the residents of Ballantyne remain on edge, hoping for justice while navigating the aftermath of this distressing incident. CMPD is committed to uncovering the details surrounding this tragic event and fostering a safer environment for everyone in the community.
