Tragic Accident in Rock Hill: Young Child Fatally Shot While Playing

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Rock Hill this past week when a young child lost their life due to a tragic accident involving a firearm. The authorities are clarifying that the child was accidentally shot and that the shooter was another child, raising serious questions about gun safety and responsibility.

The Incident and Investigation

According to the Rock Hill Police Department, the investigation began on Friday evening after a child was rushed to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. The young victim arrived at Piedmont Medical Center just before 8 p.m. Unfortunately, despite the medical team’s best efforts, the child succumbed to their injuries in the early hours of September 21.

As detectives began piecing together what had happened, they confirmed that the shooting took place in a home on Barrow Court. The investigation revealed that a loaded gun had been left unsecured in the master bedroom, making it easily accessible to the children in the house. It’s a situation that could have been avoided altogether and one that has left many in the community devastated.

The Responsible Adult

Police quickly identified 39-year-old Kunle Lawal Laguda Jr. as the individual whose negligence led to this horrific accident. According to reports, Laguda was not legally allowed to possess a firearm due to a previous conviction. This revelation has caused shock and outrage among the residents, some of whom knew him personally.

Laguda was arrested and charged with “unlawful neglect of a child.” His actions, or lack thereof, have sparked discussions about the importance of responsible gun ownership. Many local residents are expressing their frustrations over the incident, emphasizing that such tragedies need not happen if guns are properly stored and secured.

Community Reactions

Neighbors have voiced their anger and sadness over the situation. Frances Hammers, a local resident, shared her thoughts with us, saying, “We don’t need to have children dying because adults aren’t being responsible with their weapons. It’s stupid and sad. I don’t understand it. I would be devastated—God forbid—if one of my children were in that situation.”

Another resident, Rontae Williams, echoed those feelings, urging parents and gun owners to exercise caution. “You have to be very careful with guns. Like, you have to have them locked up. I’ve got kids of my own, and if that happened to me, I would be devastated,” he remarked.

The Bigger Picture

This tragic accident has opened the floor to a larger conversation about gun safety, especially around children. Rock Hill, located about 27 miles southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, is a place where families should feel secure. Incidents like this highlight that there’s a dire need for education and advocacy regarding proper gun storage and the responsibilities of firearm ownership.

As this heartbreaking story continues to unfold, community members are coming together, hoping to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future. Awareness and accountability seem to be the key takeaways as Rock Hill grapples with the implications of this unfortunate event.

For ongoing updates and more information about the case, the Rock Hill community is encouraged to stay informed, as this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance when it comes to child safety and gun management.
