Bookstore Opens at Clinton College, Celebrating Community and School Spirit

ROCK HILL — It’s an exciting time for Clinton College! As the sun peeked through the clouds on September 11, 2024, the campus celebrated a milestone moment with the grand opening of its new bookstore, a cherished addition named in honor of alumna Margaret Neely. Alumni, students, and faculty gathered to mark this special day, showcasing the school’s spirit and growth.

From Vision to Reality

Margaret Neely, a proud graduate from the class of 1955, was deeply moved by the transformation of her beloved institution. With a bright smile, she recalled recent visits to Rock Hill, mentioning how her daughter searched for Clinton College swag but found none. “It really bothered me,” Neely said, reflecting on how far the college has come since her days as a student. “This is a school that’s moving up. There was a need for a gift shop, and I’m thrilled to see this bookstore become a reality.”

This thought was echoed by Dr. Lester McCorn, the president of Clinton College, who shared his excitement during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “For far too long, we haven’t had a physical bookstore on campus. It’s essential for Clinton to have a presence in the community, especially when I see merchandise from other local colleges everywhere I go.”

More Than Just a Store

The Margaret Neely Bookstore is not just any store; it represents a symbolic step forward for the college, which is one of South Carolina’s eight historically Black colleges and serves as a cornerstone for education in the area. This year, Clinton College has welcomed its largest incoming freshman class of 120 students, bringing a vibrant new energy to the campus. The bookstore will provide easy access to college gear like T-shirts, hats, and cozy coffee mugs, making Clinton merchandise available for students and alumni alike.

Up until now, Clinton College somewhat limited their merchandise availability to special events. That’s all changing now! Situated at 1029 Crawford Road, just past the security gate, the bookstore will welcome customers weekdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. “Now, anyone in the community can pop in and find some Golden Bear gear,” Rae’L Jackson-Smith, the college spokeswoman, noted enthusiastically.

Building a Legacy

Margaret Neely’s connection to the college didn’t end when she graduated. After moving to Buffalo, New York, where she earned a master’s degree in counseling, she dedicated 30 years of her life to serving as a counselor in the local school system. Even today, Neely remains involved, working part-time as a tax preparer while still supporting her alma mater from a distance. Her commitment to Clinton’s growth shows that the heart of a Golden Bear beats strongly within her.

The bookstore’s opening coincided with other recent expansions at Clinton College, such as the newly built Academic Center for Excellence, which has added critical facilities to boost students’ learning experiences. “It’s all about progress,” said Dr. McCorn, “and we have exciting plans for our athletic departments too, including the addition of archery and cycling programs next year.”

A Bright Future Ahead

As the clouds rolled away, the sun shone brightly on Clinton College’s future that day. The new bookstore stands as a testament to the college’s commitment to serving its students, alumni, and the broader community. With the growing student body and an ever-expanding array of programs, Clinton College is truly on an upward trajectory, fostering a spirit of connection and pride among all who call the Golden Bears their own.

For those in Rock Hill, it’s time to check out the bookstore, grab some goodies, and support this remarkable institution that is on the rise. Here’s to many more years of growth, community spirit, and Golden Bear pride!
