Clinton College President Lester McCorn to Depart After Seven-Year Tenure

Clinton College President Announces Departure After Seven Years

Rock Hill, South Carolina – Clinton College President Lester McCorn will step down after seven years leading the only historically Black college in the Rock Hill region. The announcement was made on Tuesday, revealing that McCorn will take on the presidency at Paine College, a private Methodist institution located in Augusta, Georgia, beginning January 1st.

Transition Period for Clinton College

While the exact date of McCorn’s resignation has yet to be confirmed, interim leadership has already been established. Archinya Ingram, who has been with Clinton College for two decades, will serve as the interim president. Ingram brings experience as the senior vice president of business services and chief financial officer.

Search for New Leadership

The college’s search for a new president is projected to take four to six months. This effort will involve collecting input through both virtual and in-person stakeholder forums, ensuring the voices of students, faculty, and staff are heard throughout the transition.

Acknowledgment of McCorn’s Contributions

Bishop Eric Leake, chairman of the college’s board, expressed gratitude for McCorn’s leadership during his tenure. Under McCorn, Clinton College underwent significant changes that advanced its facilities, sports programs, and extracurricular activities. The college has also expanded its offerings with the addition of a new advanced digital library and five new bachelor’s degree programs.

Historical Significance of Clinton College

Founded in 1894, Clinton College was named after Bishop Isom Caleb Clinton, who is notable for his lineage as the great-great-grandfather of funk musician George Clinton. Notably, George Clinton received an honorary doctorate from the college earlier this year. McCorn acknowledged the cultural impact of Clinton’s music, stating that it allowed Black individuals to express themselves freely.

Current Student Body and Program Offerings

Currently, Clinton College serves approximately 150 students, offering degree programs in fields such as nursing, cybersecurity, elementary education, religious studies, and business management.

Looking Forward

Ingram emphasized her commitment to providing a smooth transition for all stakeholders at Clinton College. “My priority is to ensure our students, faculty, and staff experience a seamless transition as we move forward together,” she stated.

The upcoming months are set to be pivotal for Clinton College as it navigates this leadership change and continues its mission to support and educate its student body.
