FCS Football 2024: South Dakota State Leads the Charge as Teams Eye Championship Glory

As the 2024 college football season approaches, several teams are making headlines, especially in the FCS ranks. South Dakota State kicks off as the frontrunner, ranked No. 1 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll and looking to defend their title. However, challenges loom as stiff competition lies ahead, marked by teams eager to claim their first national championship.

Central Arkansas seems poised for a significant leap this year. With an opening rank of No. 11 in the STATS Perform Poll and No. 13 in the Coaches’ Poll, they have a strong foundation to build upon. The Bears feature the Buchanan Award favorite, defensive end David Walker, alongside two 1,000-yard rushers: Shun’Derrick Powell and Darius Hale. Quarterback Will McElvain adds depth to the offense, potentially setting Central Arkansas on a path toward a deep playoff run.

Chattanooga is another team to watch. Coming off a playoff victory last fall, they have a good mix of veterans on both sides of the ball. Players like Chase Artopoeus and Marlon Taylor could be in the running for national awards. With early favorites for the Southern Conference title, they may capitalize on their experience for a strong postseason showing.

Meanwhile, Sacramento State has been knocking at the door for a while. In recent years, they’ve consistently reached the second round of the playoffs, but advancing past that remains a challenge. With quarterback Kaiden Bennett taking the helm for his senior season, there’s hope that this could be the year the Hornets break through.

Looking at the larger picture, South Dakota earned a respectable No. 5 preseason rank. They’ve maintained a solid roster, setting the stage for a competitive run in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. If they manage to secure a playoff spot for consecutive years, their playoff experience may prove beneficial.

Finally, UIW has eyes set on a strong return after a remarkable FCS semifinal appearance two seasons ago. With quarterback Zach Calzada back in charge and stronger defensive stats, the Cardinals could be a dark horse to watch in the Southland Conference.

This season promises exciting prospects, as teams vie for clarity in the FCS championship picture. As always, the drama of college football is ever-present, and it remains to be seen which team will capture that long-awaited first title.
