Tragic Injury for Young College Football Player
Temecula, California – Jason Pugal, a 20-year-old college football player, faces a challenging road to recovery after suffering a severe injury during practice. Jason, who recently transferred from Palomar College in San Diego to Chadron State College in Nebraska, was practicing when a collision occurred. According to his father, Mark Pugal, “He tackled a receiver and unfortunately, it caused a fracture in his neck.”
The injury resulted in the fracturing of his C-6 vertebra, which caused instant paralysis. “Our hearts are very heavy, and we’re all trying to remain as hopeful and faithful as our son is, because he is quite a remarkable individual,” Mark shared, highlighting the family’s struggle during this difficult time.
Jason is known not only for his athletic skills but also as the oldest of five brothers. His younger brother, Kyle, reflected on their time together on the field, saying, “In high school, being able to walk into the battlefield with your brothers is an experience that not many get to get.” Kyle added that despite Jason’s injury, his brother continues to inspire him with his positive attitude, stating, “He keeps affirming he is going to walk again, he’s going to be on his feet.”
Following the injury, Jason was airlifted to Rapid City, South Dakota, to undergo emergency surgery. Mark reported that Jason is gaining some movement, mentioning, “Since the surgery now, he has a little more range of motion in his underbody.” However, he still cannot feel anything from his chest down, but he can move a bit in his left hand and feel more sensation there.
The Pugal family is now working on bringing Jason back to California to begin his rehabilitation. They have started a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the estimated $28,000 cost of the medical transport. “We’re just hoping and praying that we are able to get him over to San Diego or Southern California to where we can begin his road to rehab,” Mark stated.
Despite this life-altering injury, Chadron State College has committed to honoring Jason’s football scholarship when he is able to return. The family draws strength from their faith and the support from their community during this difficult time. Mark concluded, “Even though his body is broken, we are inspired his spirit is strong.”
