Playing in their first true road contest of the season, Winthrop fell at South Carolina by a final score of 12-2 in seven innings late Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, Winthrop drops to 0-4 overall.
Winthrop loaded the bases in the second with two outs but Lombardo’s fly out ended the inning. The Gamecocks stuck first in their half of the second on Tyler Causey’s RBI double and Will Tippett’s sacrifice bunt that brought in Causey. In the next inning, the home team made the score 5-0 on a wild pitch and Causey’s two-run homer.
The Eagles again loaded the bases in the fifth with one out and Winthrop capitalized as Jaylen Hernandez doubled to drive in two runs. However, South Carolina responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own to make the score 8-2.
South Carolina then brought in another run with one out in their half of the sixth on Tippett’s sac fly to left field, scoring Talmadge LeCroy.
