LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Cooper High School football team wrapped up its season as the Class 5A state runner-up on Saturday night, facing off against Bowling Green at Kroger Field. In a hard-fought battle, Bowling Green emerged victorious with a score of 37-20, marking the second consecutive year the two teams clashed in the state final.
Cooper finished the season with an impressive 13-1 record, showcasing a talented roster throughout the year. Their outstanding performance included dominant victories, outscoring their opponents by a remarkable total of 644 to 215 before heading into the championship game.
Junior quarterback Cam O’Hara had a standout performance, completing 18 of 27 passes for 262 yards and throwing for three touchdowns. Notable contributions came from senior wide receiver Jaiden Combs, who made seven receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown, and senior Isaiah Johnson, who caught five passes for 89 yards and also scored a touchdown.
Junior wide receiver/safety Ryker Campbell added to the team’s efforts with three receptions for 72 yards, along with three kick returns for 57 yards and an interception on defense. Senior tight end Austin Alexander also made his mark with three receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown, while making a crucial sack on defense.
On the defensive side, junior linebacker Max Wethington led the team with 13 tackles, while Dax Bolen and senior Mike Mullvihill each added 10 tackles. Throughout the season, Cooper had several signature wins, including victories over notable opponents like Ryle, Highlands (twice), and Great Crossing, securing their place in the state finals for the second year in a row.
Cooper was not the only team competing for a state title this weekend. Earlier on Saturday, Ryle concluded its season as the Class 6A state runner-up, and Beechwood secured the Class 2A state championship by defeating Owensboro Catholic 50-34, marking their 18th football state title.
As the season comes to a close, the Cooper Jaguars can reflect on their achievements and look forward to future seasons with great anticipation.
