Riley Huge Named National Pitcher Of The Week By NCBWA

Dallas, TX – Winthrop University’s senior left-handed pitcher, Riley Huge, has been named National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). This prestigious award was presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending March 3. Huge’s outstanding performance on the mound earned him this well-deserved recognition.

Record-Breaking Achievement:

In a remarkable display of skill and talent, Huge pitched 7.2 innings in his lone start of the week during the first game of the three-game home series against Maine. He allowed only one hit and two walks while recording an impressive 20 strikeouts out of his 23 outs. This incredible feat is believed to be the all-time single-game Big South record and the highest number of strikeouts by any NCAA pitcher since 2017.

Historic Moment:

Not only did Huge dominate on the mound with his exceptional pitching performance, but he also made Winthrop University proud by breaking the school’s single-game strikeout record previously held by Kevin Slowey. His outstanding achievement has solidified his place in Winthrop’s baseball history and has garnered attention at the national level.

First Winthrop Player Since 2006:

Huge’s accolade marks a significant milestone for Winthrop University, as he becomes the first Eagle to win a national player of the week award from NCBWA since Jacob Dempsey in 2006. His exceptional skills and dedication to the game have set him apart as a standout player in collegiate baseball, bringing honor and recognition to the university.

Congratulations to Riley Huge on this well-deserved achievement!
