Rock Hill Celebrates Local Leaders with Dream Keeper Award

In a heartfelt ceremony held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Rock Hill shone a light on the incredible contributions of two remarkable women, Dorene Boular and Regeana Phillips, who were honored as the co-winners of the prestigious Dream Keeper Award. This annual award recognizes individuals whose lives reflect the values of courage, compassion, and service, much like those exhibited by the legendary civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

A Celebration of Service

The award presentation was a highlight of the annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, a gathering that serves to promote unity and reflection in the community. Kiera Barber, who introduced the honorees, eloquently pointed out how their efforts are paving the way for a more just and inclusive society.

Dorene Boular: A Pillar of the Community

Dorene Boular has become a prominent figure in Rock Hill, passionately serving in various roles, particularly with the NAACP. Not only has she held the position of president, but she was also a driving force behind bringing the NAACP state convention to Rock Hill, marking a significant milestone as it was the first time the convention took place in over 25 years.

Boular also serves as the pastor of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, where she inspires her congregation through her community engagement. Her commitment does not stop there; she has founded groups such as Women of Strength and the Good News Club at the local recreation center, which are geared towards empowering women and youth in the area.

As the president of the Central City Optimist Club, Boular has tirelessly promoted youth development programs. She has engaged in initiatives with Rock Hill Neighborhood Empowerment, aiding citizens in forming neighborhood organizations that bolster community ties. Boular’s leadership also extended to crime prevention initiatives, demonstrating her steadfast commitment to making Rock Hill a safer and more vibrant place.

Her humility shone through during the award presentation as she expressed deep appreciation for being recognized, while attributing her success to her love for the community and the people within it. Despite her retirement from the city services coordinator position a year ago, she continues to be an active participant in various volunteer groups, proving that her dedication knows no bounds.

Regeana Phillips: A Lifetime of Advocacy

Another inspiring honoree, Regeana Phillips, has also displayed unwavering commitment to service throughout her life. Making history as one of the first students to transition from segregated to integrated schools in Rock Hill, Phillips broke barriers and has worked towards equality ever since.

During her decades-long career at Duke Energy, Phillips focused on diversity, inclusion, recruitment, and staffing, showcasing her dedication to fostering a fair workplace. Taking her community service a step further, Phillips founded Another Chance Staffing, which connects non-violent offenders with job opportunities, training, and mentorship, aiding individuals in reintegration into society.

Additionally, she co-founded Her Place, an organization dedicated to supporting homeless women and their unique challenges. For the past 20 years, she has also dedicated Christmas Day to serving food at St. Mary Catholic Church, embodying the spirit of giving throughout the year.

Phillips’s commitment goes beyond her professional life; she has consistently volunteered and coordinated service groups aimed at uplifting her community. The recognition she received came as a surprise, as she believes in serving without expecting accolades.

A Call to Action

The awards not only celebrate the achievements of Boular and Phillips but also serve as an inspiration for others to actively engage in their communities. Both women encourage the youth and their peers to start small, find their passions, and contribute to societal betterment. Their stories remind us that each act of kindness, no matter how small, can make a significant difference in people’s lives.

Rock Hill is fortunate to have such dedicated individuals whose commitments to service illuminate paths for others. As they continue their work, may they inspire many more to step forward and become the change they wish to see in their own neighborhoods.
