Winthrop dropped the series finale to USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 4-0. The defeat moves Winthrop to 12-17-1 overall and 4-5 in the Big South conference.
The Eagles’ performance was lacking in key plays, ultimately resulting in their loss.
In the early innings, USC Upstate took the lead with Noah Sullivan’s RBI single, setting the tone for the remainder of the game. With a series of missed opportunities and errors, Winthrop struggled to match USC Upstate’s offensive drive.
Despite a few promising moments, including a strikeout by Troy Hamilton to end the top of the second, Winthrop was unable to capitalize on these chances.
Upstate extended their lead in the third and fifth innings, putting the game out of reach for Winthrop.
Winthrop will have a chance to bounce back in a mid-week non-conference matchup against Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 6:00 p.m.
