ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Winthrop Eagles’ women’s basketball team is geared up for an intense match, as they set to face defending league champion Gardner-Webb this Saturday afternoon. The competition will take place at the renowned Winthrop Coliseum. This showdown comes right after the Eagles broke their three-game losing streak by defeating UNC Asheville in overtime with a score of 70-64.
This will be the 38th game between the Eagles and the Runnin’ Bulldogs, with Gardner-Webb presently leading the series at 27-10. Gardner-Webb proved triumphant in the two meetings held last year. Sadly, the Eagles have not had a victory since January 19, 2019, where they scored a narrow win of 64-62 on the road. The Eagles will also be attempting to claim their first home triumph against Gardner-Webb since an 81-62 result on December 5, 2015.
In their last game, the Eagles saw their three-match losing streak come to a halt against UNC Asheville, ending the overtime with a triumphant final score of 70-64. This victory was particularly significant as it was the first win the Eagles have had at UNC Asheville since 2015. Both teams had a 41% success rate in their shots on target. The Eagles demonstrated an impressive performance, with 73% success from the free throw line and scoring an overwhelming 53% from three-point range.
Winthrop has a brilliant record, with 606 victories out of 901 matches as an entire program. They hold a promising record of 205-370 in Big South regular-season games and an impressive 347-325 on their home ground.
They’re currently placing second in the Big South, defending scoring with 60.4 ppg. In addition, the team takes the top spot in the league in steals per game, with an average of 10.6 (37th in the nation). Also, in terms of turnovers forced per game, they lead the league and are 29th in the nation with 20.6.
With such stats and consistent performances, the Eagles look forward to the upcoming game and are all set to face the defending champions, Gardner-Webb, on their home ground at Winthrop Coliseum this Saturday.
