Erie High School Sports Events Postponed Due to Winter Weather
Erie, Pennsylvania – The start of the winter sports season in Northwestern Pennsylvania faced a significant hurdle last weekend due to a heavy snowstorm. With the PIAA allowing winter teams to commence play last Friday, the actual winter weather did not cooperate, leading to many local high school events being postponed or canceled.
Snowfall began overnight on Friday and continued throughout the weekend, leaving Erie County in a near-standstill. The National Weather Service has predicted an additional eight to 15 inches of snow across most areas of the county through Tuesday night, keeping the snow warning in effect.
As a result, several sporting events have been affected:
- Girls Basketball:
- North East at General McLane
- Frewsburg (New York) at Cathedral Prep
- Kennedy Catholic at Cardinal O’Hara (Tonawanda, New York)
- Boys Basketball:
- North East at Meadville has been rescheduled for December 21 at North East
- Erie at General McLane
- Warren at Mercyhurst Prep
- Girls Bowling:
- The Metro League will delay the start of their 2024-25 season to December 11. Weekly matches are set to occur every Wednesday through February 19, with a potential playoff on February 26 at Eastland Bowl.
As conditions continue to develop and more games are affected, it’s important for players and fans to keep checking for updates regarding rescheduled events and any further cancellations. Anyone looking for more details can contact local sports coordinators for up-to-date information.
