Japan-based AESC, the prominent manufacturer of high-performance battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, has announced the appointment of former BMW Manufacturing Corp CEO, Knudt Flor, as the new leader for its American and European operations.
With more than 35 years in the automotive and technology sectors, Flor’s wealth of experience is expected to spearhead AESC’s US and Europe business operations. He will be based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Under Flor’s guidance, AESC is keen to fortify its manufacturing capabilities, strengthen strategic collaborations with leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and cater to the escalating demand for zero-emission transportation solutions.
Flor’s new role as CEO spans a diverse range of operations within AESC, including businesses in Tennessee, South Carolina, and Kentucky in the US, as well as France, Spain, and the United Kingdom in Europe.
Building synergy with BMW Manufacturing, AESC is working on the development of a $700 million battery manufacturing plant situated in Woodruff. The Envision AESC and BMW Group collaboration is anticipated to foster the production of cutting-edge battery cells for BMW’s next-gen electric vehicles.
In addition to the strategic partnerships, Flor is entrusted to oversee AESC’s massive global initiative aimed at transforming its leading-edge technology into massive net-zero gigafactories. This venture aligns strategically with the broader global shift towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
Looking back at Flor’s distinguished career, his 33-year tenure at BMW was marked by significant roles overseeing operations, engineering, logistics, and quality control, not only within the United States but also in plants and joint ventures across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Among these numerous roles, he served as Head of Corporate Quality for the BMW Group, earning him an impeccable reputation in the industry.
Beyond his corporate roles, Flor also imparted his knowledge and leadership in academia. Most recently, he served as the distinguished Industry Professor of Practice at the College of Charleston and as Senior Vice President for Innovation and Industry Engagement. Additionally, Flor is one of the founding directors of the South Carolina Fraunhofer USA Alliance.
Expressing AESCe’s delight over Flor’s appointment, Shoichi Matsumoto, CEO of AESC Group, stated that Flor’s broad management experience and deep acumen would be invaluable in accelerating their efforts to bring the world’s best batteries to market. He expressed confidence that Flor would lead their North American and European operations to greater heights. On his part, Flor expressed his excitement to join AESC at such a pivotal time for the company and the industry. He sees a perfect alignment between AESC’s commitment to innovation and sustainability and his own vision for the future of the automotive industry.
