WAUKESHA — In a thrilling weekend packed with competition, Appleton North celebrated a new star as Ana Flanagan made history by winning a state championship in the 100-yard breaststroke at the annual swim meet held at Waukesha South High School. Flanagan’s impressive time of 1:03.20 secured her victory just ahead of Annika Curran from Verona Area, who finished with a time of 1:03.34.
Flanagan is now the third girl from Appleton North to claim a state title, joining the ranks of Cortnee Adams and Stephanie Gould. Adams is particularly notable for her incredible success, winning a total of seven individual state championships during her tenure at North in the 1990s. Gould clinched the diving title in 1997. Aside from her standout individual performance, Flanagan also contributed to the success of North’s 200 freestyle relay team, which took home a third-place finish with a time of 1:36.22 alongside teammates Afton Scoresby, Elise Brazzale, and Maddie Loken.
In other events, the team from Middleton emerged victorious overall, racking up an impressive 334 points in total. Appleton North placed seventh with a solid score of 107. Other standout performances included Carly Larson of De Pere/West De Pere, who took third in the 100 butterfly with a finish of 55.42 seconds, while Julia Saxman of Germantown claimed first in the same event with a speedy time of 53.34 seconds.
Moving on to the exciting finish of the 8-player state championship, it was all about Owen-Withee. Mason Gay delivered a dazzling performance, rushing for an eye-popping 321 yards and securing six touchdowns. On the other side, Calvin Peters gave a strong effort for Lena/St. Thomas, achieving 178 yards and a touchdown on the ground while also completing 10 of 16 passes for 122 yards and two touchdown throws. The game was tightly contested, with Owen-Withee totaling 417 yards of offense and Lena/St. Thomas close behind with 412 yards.
These events from Waukesha showcased the remarkable talent and dedication present in the high school sports scene across Wisconsin. With athletes like Flanagan and Gay leading the charge, the future looks bright for these emerging stars.
