The fall season is here, and high school sports in Vermont are in full swing. Various games and matches took place over the weekend, showcasing the talent of local athletes across several sports, including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running.
In the soccer arena, Merrimack faced off against Vermont in a thrilling match that ended with a score of 3-2. Rachel Bjorgan, Madison Cardaci, and Maria Lindberg each scored a goal for Merrimack, while Evelyne Blais-Savoie and Alaina Tanski netted goals for Vermont. The decisive moment came late in the second period when Lindberg’s power play broke a 2-all tie, securing Merrimack’s victory.
Another exciting match featured St. Thomas defeating Vermont 3-1. Matthew Gleason, Mason Poolman, and Cooper Gay each contributed a goal, and Aaron Trotter made an impressive 27 saves. Max Strand scored for Vermont, supported by Keenan Rancier’s impressive 37 saves.
Other notable matches included Leland & Gray edging out Randolph 3-2, and Vergennes taking down Milton 2-1. Ethan Croke was the star for Vergennes, scoring both of their goals, including a critical second goal in the 69th minute to break a 1-all tie.
The field hockey scene also saw action, with Green Mountain overcoming White River Valley 3-1 and Otter Valley defeating Woodstock 2-1. Breanna Bovey and Marissa Dick played pivotal roles in Otter Valley’s win, while Grace Perrault managed to score for Woodstock amidst strong defensive play.
