In Atlanta, Florida A&M (FAMU) kicked off their 2024 season in style by stunning Norfolk State with a 24-23 victory in the much-anticipated MEAC/SWAC Challenge. The Rattlers trailed at halftime with a score of 14-10, but a strong second-half performance turned the tide in their favor.
The Rattlers’ defense, which struggled in the first half by allowing 191 rushing yards, tightened up significantly after the break, limiting Norfolk State to only 36 rushing yards. This improvement allowed FAMU’s offense to find more rhythm. Quarterback Daniel Richardson, making his starting debut, connected with Jamari Gassett twice for touchdowns in the second half, ultimately leading to FAMU’s first victory under new head coach James Colzie III.
FAMU’s win also narrowed the challenge’s overall lead to 11-7 in favor of the MEAC, as the SWAC had been on a three-game winning streak in the series. This victory holds significance as FAMU previously won back in 2013 when they were still part of the MEAC.
Excitement surged late in the fourth quarter when Norfolk State had a chance to tie the game. After a 41-yard completion to set up a potential touchdown, the Spartans’ special teams faced a chaotic moment. An initially blocked extra point was called back due to an offsides penalty, and instead of a re-kick, Norfolk State opted to go for a two-point conversion. The attempt, however, failed as FAMU’s defense stood tall, stifling the play for a loss.
Both teams showcased their skills on the field; Norfolk State’s Jalen Daniels stepped in as quarterback, replacing Otto Kuhns, who was sidelined for the game, while FAMU’s Richardson had a standout performance, contributing both in the air and on the ground. The Rattlers capped off their offensive drives effectively, securing their lead with multiple scoring plays.
This thrilling game sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting season ahead, with future matchups in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, including North Carolina Central facing Southern in 2025 and Alabama A&M taking on Howard in 2026. The Rattlers are certainly looking to build off this momentum as they head into the rest of their season.
