FCS Football: Central Arkansas and Chattanooga Poised for Breakthrough Seasons

Football Field Competition

Central Arkansas is gearing up for what could be a breakthrough season in FCS football. The Bears are looking to shed their past playoff disappointments, as they have never advanced beyond the second round in their five playoff appearances. However, they enter the new season ranked No. 11 in the STATS Perform Poll and No. 13 in the FCS Coaches Poll. With talented players like defensive end David Walker, who is a favorite for the Buchanan Award, and a dynamic backfield with 1,000-yard rushers Shun’Derrick Powell and Darius Hale, Central Arkansas has the potential to make a deep playoff run this year. Quarterback Will McElvain adds to the offense, promising exciting plays all season long.

Chattanooga is another program to keep an eye on this year. After winning a playoff game last season, the Mocs have brought back a lot of talent on both offense and defense. Star players Chase Artopoeus and Marlon Taylor are expected to be in contention for national awards, further establishing Chattanooga as the early favorite in the Southern Conference. With the possibility of earning a bye in the playoffs, they could be well-positioned for a title chase.

Meanwhile, Sacramento State is also pushing for glory. The Hornets have made it to the second round of the FCS playoffs in the last four seasons but only reached the quarterfinals once. Under head coach Andy Thompson, Sacramento State is counting on quarterback Kaiden Bennett to lead them to their first deep playoff run since 2022.

South Dakota enters the season ranked No. 5 in both major preseason polls. With a solid roster returning, the Coyotes are poised to be competitive in the tough MVFC. They are looking to make the playoffs back-to-back for the first time and hope their experience will allow them to make a serious run.

Lastly, UIW is also on the lookout for a significant postseason showing. With quarterback Zach Calzada returning and a retooled receiving corps, the Cardinals look to bounce back from a semifinals appearance two years ago.

This season promises excitement as multiple teams aim to break through and carve their names into the history of FCS football.
