Selma, Alabama – The community is mourning the loss of Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old junior at Morgan Academy, who tragically died after sustaining a serious brain injury during a football game on Friday night. Tellier was injured in the third quarter of the game against Southern Academy and passed away at UAB Hospital on Saturday.

Coaches across the state are reflecting on this heartbreaking event, emphasizing the importance of perspective in both sports and life. Gulf Shores High head coach Mark Hudspeth expressed his sorrow, saying, “At the end of the day, this is just a game and that was a precious life.” He highlighted that losses in games and other minor adversities pale in comparison to such tragedies, reminding everyone to appreciate life and the loved ones around them.

On Monday, students, parents, and faculty members gathered at Morgan Academy for a memorial and prayer service for Tellier, where Head of School Bryan Oliver noted that the community is both grieving and celebrating Tellier’s life. “It’s about what he did to impact our school and his friends,” he stated.

Caden’s death marks the second football-related tragedy in Alabama within two weeks, following the death of Semaj Wilkins, a 14-year-old freshman at New Brockton High, who collapsed during practice. As families and friends continue to come to terms with these losses, Auburn High coach Keith Etheredge expressed deep sadness for the teams and families impacted, saying, “Your heart just breaks.” He emphasized the seemingly safe nature of modern football, pointing out advancements in equipment and rules designed to protect players.

The injury that led to Tellier’s death came after what appeared to be a routine tackle. Reports indicate that he hit his head on the ground, leading to his critical condition. Coaches, including Paul Benefield from Fyffe, have expressed their condolences and noted the inherent risks that come with contact sports, stating it’s a reality that every coach and parent thinks about.

In light of this tragedy, Morgan Academy has suspended its upcoming game, choosing instead to prioritize the wellbeing of the community. As the mourning continues, the focus remains on supporting one another and remembering the young life that was lost.
