Tragedy Strikes Selma, Alabama: High School Quarterback Caden Tellier Dies Following Football Injury

The small town of Selma, Alabama is grieving after the tragic death of high school quarterback Caden Tellier, who suffered a serious brain injury during a football game. This unfortunate incident occurred during a season opener for John T. Morgan Academy against Southern Academy.

Caden, just 16 years old, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after sustaining a head injury during a play. School officials reported that he passed away the following day. In a heartfelt statement, Caden’s parents expressed their sorrow, saying, “Our boy, Caden Tellier has met Jesus face to face. Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity, and love.” They shared that Caden was an organ donor, highlighting his giving nature even in death.

According to the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA), Caden’s injury may have been caused by a ruptured blood vessel in his brain after a routine tackle. Initial accounts indicate that those watching the game likely did not notice anything out of the ordinary. School headmaster, Bryan Oliver, mentioned that the community is still collecting information about the incident, and it could take time to fully understand what happened.

Football-related deaths are rare, with 16 cases reported across all levels in 2023, including seven at the high school level. Among these, only three were due to traumatic brain injuries, all occurring during games.

At a gathering to honor Caden, his father and assistant coach, Jamie Tellier, spoke about his son’s love for sports and his passion for sharing his faith. He remembered Caden as an exceptional athlete who inspired others. The community is coming together to support the Tellier family, with a GoFundMe campaign already raising over $85,000 for medical expenses.

In a show of solidarity, all school activities at John T. Morgan Academy have been suspended for the week. The school has also organized a time of prayer for students and parents to pay tribute to Caden.

“He was a student, a friend, an athlete, and most importantly, a Christ follower,” noted Oliver, reflecting on Caden’s positive spirit. Community members, including local pastors and grief counselors, have been on hand to support students during this difficult time.
