Selma, Alabama – The local community is mourning the loss of a talented young athlete after a tragic incident on the football field. Caden Tellier, a junior quarterback at Morgan Academy, died on Saturday following a severe brain injury sustained during a game on Friday night. The injury occurred during the third quarter of the game, where Morgan Academy secured a 30-22 victory against Southern Academy.
According to reports, Tellier was struck in the head and was subsequently airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Sadly, his injuries proved fatal, and the news of his passing was confirmed by Morgan Academy’s headmaster, Bryan Oliver, who expressed deep sorrow for the loss.
In a heartfelt statement, Oliver shared, “It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with his Lord and Savior… There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family.” He emphasized the impact that Tellier had on those around him, stating he was not only an athlete but also a devoted student and friend.
Earlier that day, there was some confusion regarding Tellier’s condition. The Alabama Independent School Association originally posted a statement indicating a tragic loss. However, this post was later updated to clarify that Tellier was in critical condition at the time. The association has announced that Morgan Academy will suspend all school activities for the coming week as they navigate this difficult time.
Tellier was a well-regarded athlete, having made a significant impact on both the football and baseball teams at Morgan Academy. In his sophomore year, he had impressive stats, throwing for 1,228 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions during the football season. Last spring, he showcased his talent in baseball by hitting .311 with two home runs and ten RBIs.
This incident marks a particularly tough period for the community, coming just a week after another high school player, 14-year-old Semaj Wilkins from New Brockton High School, tragically collapsed during practice and passed away.
