Selma, Alabama is grieving the tragic loss of a young high school quarterback, Caden Tellier, who passed away after suffering a serious brain injury during a football game on Friday night. Caden, only 16 years old, sustained the injury while playing for John T. Morgan Academy against Southern Academy at home. Following a tackle, he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and his death was confirmed the next day.

School officials stated that initial evaluations suggest Caden might have experienced a ruptured blood vessel in his brain after a typical play where he was tackled and his head hit the ground. The Alabama Independent School Association Executive Director shared that this is a tragic event, noting that spectators present at the game likely did not observe anything out of the ordinary. Reports indicate that deaths from football injuries are quite rare, with only 16 reported deaths in the sport in 2023, including seven at the high school level.

Caden’s family released a heartfelt statement, expressing their deep sorrow. “Our boy, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face to face,” they said. They also highlighted Caden’s spirit, describing him as someone who embodied “kindness, generosity, and love.” In a selfless act, Caden was an organ donor, which they stated would help save lives after his passing.

The headmaster of John T. Morgan Academy, Bryan Oliver, remembered Caden as a bright light within the school, emphasizing his role not only as a student and athlete but as a devoted follower of Christ. “He was always smiling or helping someone in need,” Oliver remarked.

To support the Tellier family, a Go Fund Me campaign has been launched, raising over $85,000 to assist with medical and other expenses. In light of this tragedy, school activities have been suspended for the week, and the academy held a prayer service to honor Caden’s memory, bringing together students, parents, and local community members.

As the community copes with this devastating loss, local pastors and grief counselors are providing support to students and staff during this difficult time.
