Rock Hill, South Carolina – A 32-year-old former police officer from Charlotte-Mecklenburg is facing harassment charges following an alarming series of incidents involving a woman he was previously in a relationship with. Dylan Lineberger, a veteran officer with nine years of experience, was arrested on Tuesday as part of ongoing investigations into his conduct.
Dylan Lineberger, a former officer with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), has been charged with first-degree harassment. The woman at the center of this case, who wishes to remain unnamed, expressed her deep concerns for her safety during a court hearing.
During the court proceedings, the woman testified that she had felt compelled to move twice within the past month due to fears for her safety. In her statement, she emphasized, “I truly fear my safety and the safety of my loved ones.” Lineberger is accused of attempting to contact her multiple times after their breakup in September of this year.
The events that led to Lineberger’s arrest took place primarily in Rock Hill. According to the police reports, on October 21, he allegedly drove a rental car to the woman’s apartment, where he conducted surveillance before throwing Pepto-Bismol onto her vehicle. This act was captured on video, which reportedly showed Lineberger passing the apartment nine times. He also followed her to a grocery store shortly after, attempting further contact.
The incidents began soon after the couple separated in September, with the harassment allegations surfacing in early October. The woman reported her concerns to CMPD’s Internal Affairs on October 9, leading to the internal investigation and ultimately Lineberger’s arrest.
This situation raises important questions about the conduct of law enforcement officers in domestic matters and the potential ramifications for the individuals involved. Lineberger is currently on administrative leave while CMPD conducts an internal investigation. The Rock Hill court set his bail at $10,000 and mandated that he wear a GPS monitor and refrain from any contact with the woman as the case proceeds.
Lineberger’s attorney, Chris Lusk, claimed that his client has a “well-decorated career” with no prior criminal record, asserting that he is not a threat to the community or a flight risk. He also highlighted that Lineberger had voluntarily sought mental health treatment prior to his arrest.
The Rock Hill charge falls under a misdemeanor category in South Carolina law, carrying a potential sentence of up to three years upon conviction. A court date has not yet been established for Lineberger’s trial. Meanwhile, he also faces a separate court date in North Carolina in November regarding a request for protection from the woman, though this particular matter is civil rather than criminal.
This unfolding case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the complexities surrounding domestic issues in law enforcement and the potential impact on both parties involved.
