Fort Mill, SC – A crossing guard was injured early Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle outside Catawba Ridge High School. The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Fort Mill Parkway, as students were arriving for school, according to local police.
Captain Steven Bivins of the Fort Mill Police Department reported that a collision between two vehicles led to one vehicle hitting the crossing guard. Both the guard and one of the drivers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, although the exact nature and extent of their injuries remain unclear.
As of 1 p.m. on Tuesday, law enforcement officials had not filed any charges related to the incident. Police Chief Bryan Zachary stated that the crash is still under investigation. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved in the incident.
The collision caused temporary road closures and delayed traffic in the area surrounding the school. Fort Mill Parkway was reopened around 9:30 a.m. following the incident. The school district issued a statement advising all families to remain vigilant and cautious when driving during school drop-off and dismissal times. Fort Mill Schools serves over 18,000 students across its 20 campuses.
The crossing guard involved in the accident is employed by Cross Safe, a Charlotte-based company that partners with local school districts to provide crossing guards. Cross Safe currently has more than 400 employees offering services at over 75 locations across 18 states.
This incident marks the second time this year a crossing guard in Fort Mill has been involved in a traffic-related accident. Earlier in March, crossing guard Stanley Brucker was struck and killed by a vehicle outside Fort Mill Elementary School and Fort Mill Middle School. Similar to Tuesday’s case, no charges were filed in that incident.
As the investigation continues, community concerns regarding the safety of crossing guards and the behavior of drivers in school zones are expected to grow. Officials hope that this recent event serves as a reminder of the critical importance of exercising caution around school areas to protect students and staff.
