Fort Mill has recently unveiled a unique addition to its downtown area: the Speckled Pear Market. Opened on December 3, 2024, by local residents Michael and Robyn Bader, this food market aims to offer a range of scratch-made meals alongside locally sourced products and beverages.
The Baders have combined their backgrounds to create a space where simplicity meets culinary creativity. Michael Bader, a chef by profession, brings his kitchen skills, while Robyn Bader contributes her experience in marketing and supply chain management. Together, they aspire to achieve their mission of providing “honest food” made from clean and simple ingredients.
During the initial soft opening, customers can explore the market’s offerings of freshly prepared dishes and local shelf items, including a selection of beer and wine. Speckled Pear Market is set to launch a complete menu early in 2025, featuring international culinary themes and special tapas hours from 4-7 p.m.
To enhance their aim of simplicity and quality, the Baders have partnered with other local small business owners. One notable collaboration is with Marcelle Malkin, the owner of Fort Mill Sourdough. Malkin had previously been making bread and cinnamon rolls from her home, gaining a loyal customer base. Her sourdough bread, created through a fermentation process that lowers gluten content, is now a staple on the shelves of the Speckled Pear Market.
Malkin shared her journey into baking, which began with her son’s dietary needs. “Sourdough isn’t gluten-free, but because of the fermentation process, it severely reduces the gluten content,” she explained. This connection to health-responsive food options aligns with the Baders’ philosophy, making the Speckled Pear an ideal venue for her baked goods.
The Baders have further ambitions for their market, hoping to incorporate cooking and food prep classes in the future. They believe that by educating the community about the preparation of wholesome ingredients, they can promote healthier eating habits. Robyn Bader emphasized the importance of clean ingredients, stating, “There’s a real desire to eat honest food.” This sentiment reflects a growing trend among consumers who are more conscious about the food they consume.
The response to the Speckled Pear Market has been overwhelmingly positive. Customers appreciate the focus on quality, and many locals are excited to have a space where they can find fresh, local ingredients under one roof. Malkin expressed her enthusiasm, declaring, “If there’s somewhere that my bread belongs, this is it. I’m so excited about their concept and how focused they are on clean ingredients for their food. These are my people.”
As the Speckled Pear Market continues to evolve, it promises to be a hotspot for delicious food, health-conscious choices, and community engagement. The Baders invite everyone to visit and experience the innovative concept they have created in the heart of Fort Mill. With ongoing support from the local community, the future looks bright for this new culinary destination.
